How Missionaries Celebrate Thanksgiving

This was the first Thanksgiving we spent in Lviv. It started like any other day in these past few months – stop by the flat, go look at tile, and take advantage of the fact that we live near a McDonalds and are out and about before Egg McMuffins go off the menu at 10am. What a treat. But it still didn’t feel like Thanksgiving. Maybe because no one else was celebrating. I just kept thinking about Macy’s parade.
For the big dinner, we went to our teammates’ apartment with 2 other families. It was a lot of fun and it felt like a true Thanksgiving celebration. In addition to Wii and a beautiful Christmas tree, Jay and Cameron prepared 2 giant turkeys. We were in charge of rolls, corn bread, and pumpkin pies. One of the things you learn as a missionary is how to figure out creative substitutes for recipes. There is no cream corn or sweeten condensed milk around here, but we’re making it work. After we got home, we just wanted to crash on the couch and watch a Christmas movie (of which we have one). However, the reality is that we had homework due that night, and we had no reason to wake up at the crack of dawn for door-busters. So it was just another night, but a very special day.
